The project to replace the Alexandra Bridge, which connects Ottawa and Gatineau, is moving forward after the federal government granted a $79-million contract to a consortium that includes Webuild, Samsung C& T, and Green Infrastructure Partners.
Capital Crossing Constructors (CCC) will take the approved design further, establish project requirements, and prepare for the eventual dismantling of the over-120-year-old bridge as well as its new replacement.
CCC consists of Webuild Civil Works Inc., Samsung C& T Ontario 1 Inc., and Green Infrastructure Partners Inc. The work will follow a progressive design-build model that enables the team to collaboratively refine aspects like scope, schedule, pricing, and risk management prior to starting major construction.
Public Services and Procurement Canada will collaborate with the consortium to maximize the use of Canadian steel, aluminum, and other local materials while also creating opportunities for Canadian suppliers during all phases of design, deconstruction, and construction.
“Canadian skills and ingenuity are at the heart of the work to replace our national capital’s oldest interprovincial road bridge,” Joël Lightbound, Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works and Procurement, said in a statement.
The new bridge design known as the Motion concept received Federal Land Use and Design Approval from the National Capital Commission in January 2026.
This design features three curved arches inspired by the Ottawa River while taking into account heritage aspects along with modern transportation needs.
Construction on the new bridge is set to start in 2028, opening up future opportunities for heavy civil contractors, subcontractors, fabricators, and Canadian material suppliers.
This project will ultimately see the aging Alexandra Bridge taken down and replaced with a new interprovincial crossing meant to serve the National Capital Region for many years ahead.
