Heavy Rain Causes Major Disruptions in Oshawa

A severe weather system hit Oshawa on Wednesday morning, unleashing heavy rains, strong winds, and creating poor visibility on the roads. There were numerous reports of washed-out streets due to the intense rainfall.

Environment Canada issued yellow-level severe thunderstorm watches and warnings for much of the Greater Toronto Area, particularly affecting areas east of Toronto that seemed to endure the worst of the storm.

Social media was filled with reports of flooding on major roads, including Wilson Road and Central Park Boulevard in the eastern part of the city. The early morning hours brought thunder, lightning, and heavy downpours.

Ishak Syed, a resident from Central Park, expressed gratitude to the “amazing people” who waded into hip-deep water on Central Park Boulevard to assist three cars stuck in floodwaters. They also helped clear roadside drains so that water could drain away, allowing traffic to resume. “It feels wonderful to know that we live in such a caring community, where people step up to help one another in times of need.”

Another social media user noted “constant explosions” in the sky along with “lots of rain,” while others shared their experiences about the deluge occurring within the city.

“We’ll be needing paddles soon, boys,” was one light-hearted comment reflecting on the situation.

The storm made driving hazardous as visibility dropped significantly and windshield wipers worked overtime; Highway 407 was especially noted for its dangerous conditions.

By 7 a. m., Environment Canada had lifted its severe thunderstorm warning for most areas but cautioned residents and commuters that heavy rains “may cause flash flooding and significant reductions to visibility.”

The warning also mentioned large hail that could cause “significant damage and injury,” as well as a potential tornado (which did not occur).

This week’s ongoing rain has disrupted sports events across the region. Neighbors Clarington and Whitby both canceled activities at local baseball fields because of weather conditions.
