OPP detachments in midwestern Ontario are reminding families to get ready for a safe Halloween this weekend.
Wellington County OPP is sharing some useful safety tips to ensure everyone enjoys the annual candy hunt without any issues.
Media Relations Officer Carly Mc Keown stated that trick-or-treaters should always “Be Safe and Be Seen.”
“Trick-or-treaters are encouraged to carry a flashlight or wear reflective clothing to stay visible to motorists,” Mc Keown added. “Little ones should always be accompanied by an adult, and should be taught to never enter a stranger’s home.”
OPP advises children to stick with a group or a trusted adult.
“Older children should plan their trick-or-treating route ahead of time, and make sure a parent or guardian knows where they will be and when they’re expected back,” Mc Keown explained. “Walk on the sidewalk whenever possible and always look both ways before crossing the street.”
“Parents should check candy and throw away any unwrapped treats or homemade goodies from strangers,” Mc Keown pointed out. “Motorists are reminded to slow down and stay alert, especially in neighborhoods where kids will be trick-or-treating.”
During the excitement of trick-or-treating, kids might run into traffic. Drivers need to be extra careful when entering or leaving driveways.
Meanwhile, Perth County OPP reminds drivers to avoid distractions, turn on their headlights early for better visibility at dusk and after dark, and never drive while impaired by alcohol, cannabis, or other substances.
Huron OPP noted that officers will conduct highly visible patrols across Huron County towns and villages to help keep things safe on Halloween night.
