In a significant event at the Superior Court of Justice in Oshawa, near Bond Street and Mary Street, Durham Regional Police officers have been found not guilty of any criminal actions after the arrest of defence lawyer Sudine Riley on January 23, 2026. This incident, which took place within the courthouse, caught a lot of public attention when Riley accused the officers of physically assaulting her, claiming her head was slammed against a desk, leading to injuries.
The arrest was made under the Trespass to Property Act and prompted Durham police to ask for an outside investigation by York Regional Police (YRP) because of the serious allegations. After a careful examination, YRP determined there wasn’t enough evidence to file criminal charges against the officers. The case has now been sent to the Law Enforcement Complaints Agency under Ontario’s Community Safety and Policing Act for further consideration, with Durham police promising full cooperation throughout the process.
