Following a recent announcement of $151.5 million in annual funding for Durham College, the Ontario government has allocated $91.9 million to its neighboring institution, Ontario Tech University in north Oshawa.

This funding is part of the province’s new financial model, which aims to inject an additional $6.4 billion into universities, colleges, and Indigenous Institutes throughout Ontario to ensure long-term sustainability within the educational sector.

The funds will help Ontario Tech continue training students for careers that are in demand and align with future labor market needs, stated school president Dr. Steven Murphy.

“This investment means we can continue to deliver the high-quality, market aligned, STEM-focused education that the province needs to fill in-demand sectors. Strengthening post-secondary education strengthens the economy, fosters innovation and helps ensure there are highly skilled graduates prepared to bolster Ontario’s economic growth for generations to come.”

Starting this fall, operating funding for post-secondary institutions will rise by 30 percent to reach $7 billion, focusing on programs that meet both student interest and regional as well as provincial labor market needs. The model also provides specialized funding for smaller rural, northern, and French institutions so students all across the province can access a world-class education.

“It is imperative that we continue to train a strong, highly skilled workforce for Ontario for decades to come,” said Nolan Quinn, Minister of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security. “while continuing to keep education accessible and keep costs down for students and their families.”

Under this new framework, the government is investing $1.7 billion toward 70,000 in-demand seats across the province. This investment will increase enrollment in health care programs as well as skilled trades and STEM fields needed by businesses and communities alike. A call for proposals related to this funding will be announced this spring with openings expected by fall 2026.

“World-class innovation can begin right here in Durham,” enthused Durham MP Todd Mc Carthy.
