An Oshawa man is facing charges following a lengthy investigation into claims that he drugged and sexually assaulted a woman who came to Canada to work as an au pair.

The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) reported that the victim met a couple with several children through a Facebook au pair group in 2025. She agreed to move to Canada to live with them and help with child care in exchange for room and board. She arrived in December 2025 and settled into their home in Oshawa.

According to police, the alleged assault took place on Dec. 12, 2025, when the suspect offered the victim ice cream. Shortly after consuming it, she felt disoriented and then lost consciousness. Later, she sought medical help, where tests confirmed that a harmful drug was found in her system.

In early 2026, authorities executed a search warrant at the suspect’s home. Officers seized several electronic devices along with amounts of the same drug believed to have been used during the incident. Police stated that forensic analysis of these devices revealed further evidence relevant to the case, including materials related to child sexual abuse and exploitation.

On June 10, investigators arrested the suspect without any issues. Police expressed concern there might be other victims and released a photo of the accused.

Derek Stephen Bellamy, 38, from Oshawa, faces charges including sexual assault, administering a noxious substance, five counts of voyeurism, five counts of possessing recordings obtained by voyeurism, possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material, and accessing such material.

He has been held pending a bail hearing.

These allegations have not yet been proven in court.
