Winnifred Joyce ‘Winn’ passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on July 8, 2026.
We find comfort in knowing that Winn is now with her loving parents Stan and Ruby Sharpe, along with her siblings Lillian (Roger) Belair, Cathy Sharpe, Len Sharpe (Brenda), brother-in-law Aird Fisher, and her husbands George Fisher (1979) and Jim Walsh (2023).
Winn will be fondly remembered by her children Kevin Fisher (Diane Brown), Shawna Armitage (Jamie), and grandchildren Ewan and Madelyn. She leaves behind her dear sister Bertha Sharpe, beloved brothers Ken Wong (Carol), Ian Sharpe, Ed Sharpe (Michelle), sister-in-law Dorothy Wier, brother-in-law Kemp Fisher, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Winn had a strong love for education. She graduated from Laurentian University in 1971 before earning a Master of Education at the University of Toronto in 1975. After obtaining an Ontario Teacher’s Certificate in 1978, she dedicated 35 years to teaching within the Algoma District School Board. Her commitment to organization-often wanting things “done yesterday”-punctuality, and determination contributed greatly to her success as an educator. She began at William Merrifield Public School where she became a role model for many students before transitioning to Francis H Clergue Public School where she made lasting friendships. Eventually, she retired after several years at Ben R Mc Mullin Public School.
The love Winn had for her family and friends was unmatched. She cherished spending time with them above all else. Over the years, she enjoyed countless rounds of golf, backyard pool parties, Caribbean cruises, trips to Las Vegas for some fun gambling, and spent many winters as a snowbird in Florida. A devoted Toronto Blue Jays fan, she rarely missed a game and often spent hours chatting on the phone with her sister Bertha so they could share the experience together. Winn always looked forward to gathering with friends over delicious meals whether dining out or hosting at home.
Everything Winn did was for her kids Kevin and Shawna. She worked hard to support them while teaching them valuable lessons along the way; nothing made her prouder than seeing who they grew up to be. This same love extended to her grandchildren Ewan and Madelyn as well-she seized every opportunity to spoil them while cheering on their achievements through texts or visits. Winn loved sharing how polite and kind-hearted her grandchildren were.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the kindness shown by Winn’s many friends and neighbors as well as the staff at Sault Area Hospital including doctors and nurses from Bayshore along with everyone at CBI. Your compassion has been deeply appreciated.
Family and friends are invited to gather in the West Section of Greenwood Cemetery on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at 11:00 a. m. for a graveside service followed by a gathering at Winn’s home from 1:00 p. m. until 4:00 p. m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Sault Area Hospital Foundation or Canadian Cancer Society which would mean a lot to the family. Arrangements are entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Road, 705-945-7758).
