Sydney “Syd” Stanley Cornwell was born on August 27, 1940, in Toronto, Ontario. He passed away peacefully on April 29, 2026, at his home in Huntsville. Syd’s life was filled with dedication, quiet strength, and a love that reached beyond just his family.
A skilled excavator and heavy equipment operator, Syd played a key role in building some of Canada’s most famous structures. From digging the foundation for the CN Tower to working on bridges and buildings at Arrowhead Park, his hands helped create landmarks that are still admired today. As the owner and operator of Syd Cornwell Excavating, he expertly handled excavators, bulldozers, dump trucks, and backhoes-always taking pride in his work. His early years were marked by cherished family camping trips to Tobermory and many happy days spent at his brother George’s log cabin-a place where they built memories together.
In 1980, Syd relocated from Toronto to Huntsville where he created an open and welcoming home that brought happiness to all who visited. Known as a strong yet quiet person with a kind heart, Syd’s personality shone through during meaningful conversations and moments when he offered thoughtful advice. His desire to help others guided him throughout life; he assisted a close friend and her family in seeking a better future away from Cuba. He had a true passion for making the world kinder and loved brightening the lives of those around him.
Syd had a great sense of humor-he always knew how to make people laugh and light up any room with his wit. Family dinners were special occasions for him; enjoyed casually but filled with genuine warmth. His enthusiasm for keeping everything polished showed through whether it was his beloved muscle cars or heavy equipment or even his treasured Harley Davidson bikes-all reflecting his attention to detail and pride in what he loved. The outdoors held joy for him as well; hunting, snowmobiling, and meticulous yard work brought him unmatched happiness-he took great pleasure in perfectly cutting his grass.
His interest in horoscopes often surprised people since he could usually guess your sign before you mentioned it-it revealed an interesting perspective on others. Syd’s affection for people was deep; he adored spending time with his grandchildren and kids overall while having a particularly close bond with his daughter Lauren Cornwell-Ellis whom he raised as a single father.
Syd is survived by his son James “Jimmy” Cornwell; daughter Lauren Cornwell-Ellis along with her husband Drew; and beloved grandchildren Evan Ellis and Sydney Ellis. He also leaves behind siblings Diane Smith (Bob), Joseph Cornwell, and Malone Sinclair (Helen). He was preceded in death by his father Sidney Stanley Cornwell; mother Edna Louise Cornwell; sisters Doreen, Joan, Sharon; brothers George and Fred.
In honoring Syd’s humble wishes there will be no funeral service or formal celebration of life. He requested that nothing be done formally but encouraged everyone to remember him their own way. His kindness, humor, and unwavering love will keep his spirit alive within all who knew him.
Memorial donations may be made to organizations supporting children’s services or women’s shelters-a fitting tribute to someone who dedicated so much of himself towards making the world more compassionate.
