CROSS – The family of Reverend Arthur Cross, who was the loving husband of the late Marjorie Cross, sadly announces his passing on Sunday, December 28, 2025. He was 94 years old. Arthur Edmund Cross was born on July 28, 1931 in Regina, SK to Rev. Arthur and Mary Cross. He spent his childhood in several small towns in Saskatchewan where his father served as a United Church minister and completed high school at Asquith and Viscount, SK. It was during this time that Art chose to pursue a career in Christian ministry like his father and older brother William (Bill) Arthur Cross. This decision took him to the University of Saskatchewan in 1949 for a Bachelor of Arts degree, followed by three years at St. Andrew’s College where he graduated in 1955. He was ordained on June 6, 1955 at Westminster United Church in Regina. After completing his thesis titled “Principles of Biblical Interpretation”, he earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1964. Following ordination, Art dedicated five years to the Ogema pastoral charge, then four years at Lucky Lake, nine years at Broadway United Church Regina, sixteen years at St. Andrew’s United Church Yorkton, and three years at Yellow Grass for a total of 37 years serving full time in the United Church Ministry before retiring in Yorkton in 1992. In 2020, Art received recognition from the Moderator of the United Church of Canada for achieving an impressive milestone of ordination lasting 65 years. Art married Marjorie Eileen Holman in 1959 after meeting her during his third “summer mission field” assignment in Duval, SK. Throughout their ministry together, Marge played an essential role by supporting church activities such as Sunday School and youth work through the United Church Women’s group. For both Art and Marge who grew up within a Christian context this way of life continued throughout their lives together.
Throughout his ministry journey, Art focused heavily on pastoral care. He loved visiting people whether it was at home or places like coffee shops and nursing homes or hospitals. Singing and music were always integral parts of his work; wherever he went you could find him either leading hymns or participating actively with choirs. Treating everyone with kindness and respect came naturally to him as he aimed to be guided by the “gifts of the Spirit”. His smiley demeanor paired with quick humor made interactions warm and enjoyable for all those around him.
While living in Yorkton for ten years he also contributed his time serving on local boards including that of the Cancer Society as well as ten years with SIGN (Society for Involvement with Good Neighbours). Additionally he held positions within Presbytery acting as Mission Support convener for many years during which time he never adhered strictly to literal interpretations regarding theology; instead choosing always seek deeper symbolic meanings when interpreting scripture during sermons.
On a personal level outside church duties-Art possessed skills as handyman who enjoyed working with wood creating various projects while repairing things came easily too! In later years hobbies included bird carving/painting alongside some friends resulting eventually into collection hanging proudly displayed upon dining room wall featuring nine different types birds! Nature fascinated him deeply; marveling often over beauty found among skies waters woods creatures flowers alike brought joy into daily life experienced reading newspapers magazines while sipping coffee downtown proved another source pleasure enjoyed attending numerous Continuing Education classes throughout career.
In addition regular church responsibilities-he engaged passionately engaging sports hobbies ranging from woodworking decorating camping fishing tennis canoeing swimming golfing summers curling skating winters! Interestingly enough continued ice skating alongside wife Marjorie until age eighty! Spending quality moments family gave greatest happiness; cherished visits shared children grandchildren great-grandchildren carried immense value towards heart!
With kind-heartedness playful spirit ability turn situations into songs-Art will certainly be missed dearly! Preceded death are beloved wife Marjorie along sister Florence brother William sisters-in-law Muriel brothers-in-law Donald Jerry Ken leaving behind cherished memories survived by three children: Brent (Lisa) Vaughn (Linda) Daneen five grandchildren: Colby (Laura) Cassidy(Hayden) Sasha(Steve) Bethany(Christian) Kendra(Austin); eleven great-grandchildren: Lyla Kendall Traeton Kaydence Shadyn Brayson Jasmine Kaycie Mason Violet Lola siblings June Shirley alongside extended families friends alike!
