Sara Jane (Sally) Heinmiller Glanville peacefully passed away on Friday, June 5, 2026 at her home in London, Ontario, Canada.
Born on August 28, 1938 in Columbus, Ohio to James Louis and Jane Born Heinmiller, Sally graduated as the valedictorian from St. Joseph Academy in 1956. She started her college education at Columbus College of Art and Design and earned a Fine Art degree from The Ohio State University in 1961. After moving to Cleveland, Ohio, she worked as an assistant in the children’s room at the Cleveland Public Library before joining Wyse Advertising Company as a commercial artist.
In Cleveland, Sally met Edward Vance Glanville from Blackrock (Dublin), Ireland. They married at St. Catharine Catholic Church in Columbus on May 2, 1964. When Edward took a job at the University of Utrecht, they moved to the Netherlands where Sally explored her passion for fine arts by learning lithography and etching. In the late 1960s, they settled in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and started their family in the early 1970s. Although they later divorced, they stayed in Canada with their children.
Sally showcased her artistic talents throughout her life. As a child, she enjoyed drawing paper dolls and embroidering quilts and dishtowels. As an adult, she initially worked with woodcut and screen process art before exploring prints, lithography, photography, photo collage and large-format drawings on paper.
For two decades, Sally taught at various colleges in Toronto including Ryerson Polytechnic University, George Brown College and Sheridan College in Oakville. She developed a special interest in capturing dance movement and fashion illustration while also teaching community lifelong learning programs. Her long association with Open Studio-a printmaking cooperative studio-was significant to her artistic journey. After earning a certificate in computer layout from ITDC Institute at the University of Toronto School of Architecture, she easily integrated digital technology into her artwork. Her pieces were displayed across numerous galleries throughout Ontario as well as at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC.
Sally drew inspiration through extensive travels across Europe as well as North and East Africa and India. A trip to Morocco in 1979 led to “Paintings from a Moroccan Diary,” which was showcased at Ohio State’s Faculty Club during January-February of 2000.
In the late ’90s, Sally returned to her hometown of Columbus where she resumed work in advertising by becoming an assistant art director for Ohio Magazine before eventually returning to Canada again.
An avid reader with a love for literature from The New Yorker, Sally was also quite skilled when it came to cooking delicious meals like homemade yogurt, semoilna cake, and baked artichokes for family gatherings. Her playful spirit shone through during flamingo-themed birthday partiesand humorous cards she sent out. Her unique style reflected not only through her wardrobe but also through Christmas cards that she designed for loved ones.
Sally’s friendly demeanor was paired with good humor, gentleness, and independence which remained strong until her final days. She felt thankful for all experiences throughout life especially those cherished memories from earlier years that brought joy during her last months.
Sally is predeceased by both parents , her former spouse, and brother-in-law Paul Butler. She is survived by son Ranulf (Julie) along with granddaughters Katherine & Lauren ; daughter Celia (David Beal )and granddaughters Maia & Zoë ; sisters Suzanne Heinmiller Butler , Lucinda Heinmiller Spikowski (Ken ); brother Stephen Heinmiller(Shelley); nieces Betsy Butler, Mary Spikowski & Jane Spikowski Nolan(Robert ); great-niece Hannah Smith.
As per Sally’s wishes, hers ashes will be scattered somewhere meaningful for family members. A memorial service won’t take place, but Masses will be held honoring Sally’s memory: Tuesday August25th @11:45 AM @St. Patrick Catholic Church(Columbus)and January2nd ,2027@5 PM @Holy Spirit Catholic Church(Avon Lake , Ohio).
