Richard “Dick” Gordon, a theoretical biologist, was born on November 6, 1943, in Brooklyn, New York. He passed away in Dauphin, Manitoba, Canada on June 14, 2026, after a short battle with AML. He is survived by his wife, retired scientist Natalie K Björklund-Gordon; children Leland, Bryson, Chason Gordon; and Justin, Alan, and Lana Hunstad; siblings Dan, Helen and Bill Gordon; as well as many grandchildren from blended families along with nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Jack and Diana Gordon.

Gordon studied at the University of Chicago where he earned an undergraduate degree in mathematics before completing his Ph D in chemical physics at the University of Oregon. From 1978 to 2011, he served as a professor at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. Known for his eclectic scientific approach and being a prolific writer, he over 200 peer-reviewed articles across various fields. He edited more than two dozen academic books and special journal issues including two that outlined his research on embryology. Gordon testified twice as an expert witness before the Canadian Parliament. His work often bridged disciplines such as biology with mathematics, engineering, physics and chemistry. One of his most significant contributions was creating the nonlinear Algebraic Reconstruction Technique which pioneered adaptive image processing and made three-dimensional imaging like CT and MRI possible. He also founded “Books With Wings,” a charitable initiative connecting students from Canada, Britain and America with their peers in Afghanistan to supply books for universities throughout Afghanistan while collaborating with the Canadian military. After five years of exploring in a travel trailer, he made Alonsa Manitoba his home in 2018 where he lived until his passing.

Interment took place at Gray’s Ridge Cemetery following a private graveside service. Those wishing to honor him are encouraged to donate to Right to Learn Afghanistan. The family extends their gratitude to Dr. Lauren Baker and staff at Dauphin Regional Hospital for their exceptional patient-centered care during this difficult time.
