Luke (Lucas) James Morrison, a devoted husband and father who made a name for himself as a DJ before becoming a skilled lawyer, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2026, in Canmore at the age of 44.

His passing occurred at Canmore General Hospital due to a sudden cerebral aneurysm.

Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Luke graduated from Ross Sheppard High School and then attended the University of Alberta. He earned his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Political Science followed by his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in 2008.

Luke had an impressive career in energy law with Bennett Jones LLP in Calgary, where he practiced for nearly twenty years. He was respected as one of Canada’s top energy lawyers, guiding clients in both renewable and traditional energy sectors. His work mainly involved upstream and midstream oil and gas agreements, joint ventures with Indigenous partners, and the business side of energy restructuring and insolvency.

His expertise led to national recognition; he was named one of Canada’s Top 40 Lawyers Under 40. Luke also served on the Board of the Canadian Energy Law Foundation (CELF) and spoke at events for organizations like the World Petroleum Congress, the University of Calgary, the Petroleum Acquisition & Divestment Association, and the Canadian Bar Association.

Luke had a deep commitment to providing opportunities for children because he believed education could transform lives. As chair of The Educational Partnership Foundation (TEPF), he worked to promote literacy and skilled trades programs across communities in Calgary.

Before-and sometimes during-his legal career, Luke was also a professional DJ. He loved house music immensely and found joy in every aspect associated with it. Music served as both a creative outlet for him and a way to connect people together. Some of his happiest memories were spent exploring new tracks, crafting mixes, and most importantly sharing them with others. A highlight for him was having one of his tracks played on Pete Tong’s radio show where he was dubbed a “master editor.” After enjoying some drinks with friends or colleagues, he’d often try teaching them how to DJ or use turntables.

A lifelong fan of the Edmonton Oilers, Luke’s love for hockey began when he was young and never faded away. The recent playoff runs became more than just games-they provided reasons to gather with friends old and new while sharing excitement as well as hope (and heartbreak) that only sports can deliver.

Despite all his achievements professionally or through hobbies, Luke’s greatest pride came from his family.

He spent twenty-five amazing years with Kathryn-the love of his life-building their world together filled with friendship, laughter, and unwavering support. They welcomed their greatest joy into their lives when their son Jack arrived. Luke often described waiting for Jack’s arrival as “terrifyingly wonderful,” which reflected anyone’s experience seeing him interact with Jack witnessing just how devoted he truly was. Fatherhood brought him immense happiness; whether it was tackling the biggest roller coaster at an amusement park or diving headfirst into Jack’s latest escapade-Luke committed fully each time. He approached every idea bursting with enthusiasm along with creativity that inspired Jack to believe anything could be possible.

People will remember Luke fondly for his sense of humor combined with genuine kindness paired alongside quiet professionalism-all sometimes occurring simultaneously! He engaged thoughtfully while approaching life authentically whether preparing elaborate meals tending gardens negotiating complex agreements-always striving towards doing best work possible-and usually achieving that goal!

One remarkable quality about Luke? His ability always to truly see others! From childhood onward this gift allowed many individuals around him feel heard understood valued-a lasting impression remained upon everyone fortunate enough connecting within conversation regardless if lasted five minutes five hours folks departed feeling as though had genuinely been listened too! This rare skill enabled making people feel important no matter circumstance they faced!

In addition surviving are Kathryn Jack along other loved ones including mother stepfather Judith Rick Sokolowski; sister brother-in-law Christal Pierre Myner; parents-in-law Brian Mary Jane Farrell; sister-in-law brother-in-law Stephanie Michael Thrasher along extended family dear friends colleagues at Bennett Jones clients whose lives improved thanks knowing him! Sadly predeceased by father Jim Morrison

The legacy left behind lies within family cherished friendships nurtured colleagues valued countless lives touched generosity integrity kindness!

A passionate advocate advocating education deeply believing creating opportunities others learn thrive-donations may be made memory’s sake towards The Educational Partnership Foundation (TEPF) via online donation page linked above
