Obituary For Ms. Dorothy Mae Canada

Funeral Arrangements

Ms. Dorothy Mae Canada, who lived in Montgomery, AL, passed away on July 9, 2025. Her funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at New Canaan Baptist Church located at 5680 Atlanta Hwy, Montgomery, AL. Burial will take place afterward in Greenwood Cemetery.

Full Obituary

Ms. Dorothy Mae Canada was a dedicated member of her community and a longtime resident of Montgomery, Alabama. She passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 9, 2025. She was 88 years old.

Dorothy was born on October 17, 1936, in Montgomery, Alabama. She was the fourth of thirteen children born to the late George Sr., and Emma Canada. Growing up in a loving and faith-filled household laid the groundwork for her lifelong dedication to family and service.

A proud graduate of Georgia Washington High School in 1955, she furthered her studies at Booker T. Washington Business School in Birmingham, Alabama. With her strong work ethic and determination, she moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she developed a successful career in accounting as a committed professional.

In the mid-1970s, Dorothy made her way to Augusta, Georgia. There she began a rewarding career at Gracewood State School and Hospital as a Senior Health Services Technician until her retirement in 2000; she always showed compassion and integrity throughout her work.

Dorothy’s faith played a vital role in her life. As one of the founding members of First Metropolitan Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia, she served joyfully on the Usher Board along with various church groups. After retiring and returning to Montgomery to care for her aging parents until they passed away lovingly by her side; she rejoined New Canaan Baptist Church where she remained an active member contributing significantly to several ministries.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents George Sr., and Emma Canada as well as two brothers Willie James Canada and George Canada Jr. She leaves behind a legacy filled with love kindness and strong faith.

She is survived by: her devoted daughter Wandra Canada Chappell; grandson Nicholas Christian Chappell; siblings Joseph Canada Solomon Canada Clarence Canada Sr., John (Gloria) Canada Jimmie Canada Rev Johnnie (Joan) Canada Irene Canada Emma Canada Samuel (Linda) Canada Sr.; Gloria Canada Campbell; numerous nieces nephews cousins countless friends caregivers along with church family members.

The funeral services honoring her life will take place at New Canaan Baptist Church (5680 Atlanta Highway) on Saturday July 19th at eleven o’clock A. M. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery with a repast immediately after held at New Canaan Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.

A life fully lived means that Dorothy Mae Canada’s memory will always be cherished by everyone who knew and loved her.
