We are deeply saddened to share that Leslie Dean Culbert passed away peacefully on May 20, 2026, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, at the age of 93. Born in Calgary, Alberta, he moved to northern Ontario in the early 1950s. Leslie began his career with the Ontario Provincial Police, serving in Thunder Bay, Longlac, and Nipigon detachments. He later became Chief of the Lakehead Harbour Police.
After a fulfilling career in law enforcement, Leslie shifted to the trucking industry during the early 1970s. He started out in logging and eventually teamed up with his brother-in-law to establish a long-haul trucking company that operated across Canada and the United States until he retired in the late 1990s.
Leslie leaves behind his daughter, Leslie (Paul Malcolm), along with sons Terry (Carolyn Lehto) and Brad. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Dawn (Dave), and grandchildren Kelsey and Colton Culbert, as well as Shae Malcolm (Steve Borysiewicz). His extended family includes sister Zelda Stentiford and brother Lorne Culbert. He was predeceased by his wife Olga Marion Culbert after 68 years of marriage; son Dean Culbert (Dawn); brothers Don and Gordon Culbert; brother-in-law Merlyn Stentiford (Zelda); along with other relatives.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and healthcare staff at the Hospice and Palliative Care unit of St. Joseph’s Care Group, as well as those at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC). A special thank-you goes out to the second-floor team at Southbridge Lakehead Manor for their exceptional care provided to our father.
In line with Leslie’s wishes, his immediate family will come together at St. Andrew’s Cemetery for his ashes’ interment.
