With heavy hearts, we share the news of Stanley Sam Carlson’s passing on May 20, 2026, at the age of 75.
Stanley was born in Port Arthur, Ontario, on September 9, 1950, to Sam Alver Carlson and Dorothy Carlson (née Grainger). In his youth, Stan found that school wasn’t for him and decided to join the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He served proudly from 1967 to 1971 before starting a long and respected career with the newly established Thunder Bay Police Force in October 1971, where he wore badge #128.
Stan devoted three decades to serving the community he cared about deeply, retiring in spring 2001. A lot of his time on duty was spent walking along Simpson Street, where he took pride in making a positive impact on those around him. Anyone who knew him recognized his quiet commitment to helping others and his strong sense of responsibility.
Stan had a larger-than-life presence but had a kind and gentle nature beneath that tough exterior. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and being outdoors. An accomplished small-engine mechanic, he seemed to know everything about engines-from snowmachines and ATVs to boat motors. Friends and family could often find him fixing something in the garage or assisting someone with their engine troubles. He loved teaching others how to repair things as well, especially his “adopted son,” Paul, willingly sharing his expertise with anyone eager to learn.
Stan was always active and never idle. He constantly had a project underway and couldn’t resist a good deal. In later years, he particularly enjoyed exploring Google and You Tube, always excited to learn new repair techniques and solutions.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Jennifer Carlson (née Zienkewicz), who passed away in 1998.
Above all else, Stan was a proud father and grandfather. He is survived by his son Kevin and partner Laura as well as his cherished grandchildren Hannah and Parker. His loyal companion for 19 years, Molly the dog will also miss him dearly.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre-especially at the Cancer Clinic-as well as the caring team at St. Joseph’s Care Group Hospice Unit (4 North) for their exceptional care during this time.
In accordance with Stan’s wishes, there will be no funeral service held. A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
