We are heartbroken to share the news of Laurie Chochla (née Wakefield), who passed away peacefully on June 29, 2026, at TBRHSC, surrounded by her loving family.
Laurie was born on February 7, 1962, in Port Arthur, Ontario, to Irene Wakefield. Her childhood was filled with outdoor adventures with friends around her home on Alice Avenue and wonderful times at the family camp on One Island Lake.
Laurie found true love in Gary Chochla at the Horseshoe Tavern and married him when she was just 21. Together they created a life rich in love and laughter, raising three children: Matt, Steven, and Chrissy. She threw herself into motherhood as a devoted stay-at-home mom. A proud hockey mom, she rarely missed a game and was often seen cheering for her boys from the stands. Laurie’s passion for playing piano was something she joyfully shared with her daughter; she never missed a recital.
With an impressive work ethic that she passed down to her kids, Laurie held various jobs over the years including housekeeping at LU Fieldhouse, Mama’s Grill, Annalee’s, Wendy’s, and more recently at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Wherever she worked, she built lasting friendships and made a positive impact on everyone around her.
Laurie had an incredible ability to connect with others. Running errands often turned into long chats with someone she knew-or even someone new she’d just met. Her warm personality made people feel comfortable around her; she was trustworthy and generous to all. Always quick to help others out, Laurie seldom asked for assistance herself.
A true bargain hunter at heart, Laurie loved planning garage sale routes and hunting for hidden treasures in thrift stores. Family members would joke that if you needed something, chances were Laurie already had two (or more) tucked away somewhere safe.
Her love for animals shone through especially with her dogs; she found happiness in life’s simple moments. Swimming brought her joy throughout her life-from childhood days spent at camp to enjoying laps later on at the Canada Games Complex where she’d formed friendships with ladies in the changing room.
Laurie’s creativity knew no bounds-she enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting Halloween costumes and handmade gifts like hats and dishcloths for those close to her. She also excelled in baking beautiful custom birthday cakes that became highlights of family gatherings.
Although life presented many challenges-including losing her mother along with her husband Gary and best friend Val within a short time-she faced everything head-on with immense strength and resilience. She taught her children that no matter how tough things got, family support along with perseverance and love would see them through.
Being “Baba” brought Laurie unparalleled pride. Every moment spent with her grandchildren was precious; she’d eagerly show off their pictures to anyone interested as they were truly the light of her life.
Laurie will be fondly remembered by partner Dave; children Matt (Cassandra) and Chrissy (Derek); grandchildren Tessa, Carsynne, Hailey, Oakley, Hudson, Hazel and Eleonora; sister Debbie; brother Ron; sisters-in-law Bev, Kathy, Donna , Barbara (Joe), Loretta (Ron); along with many nieces , nephews , extended family members , and dear friends. She was predeceased by beloved husband Gary Chochla ; son Steven ; mother Irene Wakefield ; in-laws John , Elsie Chochla ; brothers Den , Kevin , Doug.
The family wishes to thank first responders , Dr. Cunningham , Dr. George , ER & ICU team at TBRHSC for their caring support. A Celebration of Laurie’s Life will take place Sunday July 19th from 11am-2pm at Slovak Legion. In lieu of flowers donations can be made towards Adult & Teen Challenge.
