Joseph Raymond Bergie, known to many as Ray, peacefully passed away on August 17, 2026, at Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on January 12, 1934, in Toronto, Ontario. Ray’s life was filled with love for his family, a strong commitment to community service, and values that inspired everyone lucky enough to know him.
Ray is survived by his dear wife, Beverly (nee Smith), who stood by him as a source of strength throughout their 70 years together. They created a family that was always at the heart of Ray’s joy and pride. He is also survived by his children: Steven Bergie (Katrina), the late Carrie Ann Bergie, Gene Bergie (Lee), Lori Henderson (Greg), and Clayton Bergie (Jennifer). Each one carries forward his spirit of kindness and community involvement. Ray’s love extended to his grandchildren-Adam (Alexandra), Nikole (Miguel), Matthew, Kayleigh (Devon), late Shaun, Keri, Brieanna, Brittney (Douglas), Braedan (Kathleen), Brooke (Andy), Ryley (Max), and Jayden-who brought great happiness into his later years. His many great-grandchildren will also deeply miss him: Josh, Millie, Cody, Natalie, Gabriella, Matteo, Jordyn, Kara, Elyjah, Ariel, William, Nora, Aubrey, Evie, Blake, Ethan and Nova. Each of them held a special place in Ray’s heart as he celebrated their achievements with pride.
Throughout his life journey; Ray showed a strong desire to serve others and remained dedicated to his community. As a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus at Father Eugene O’Reilly Council #4973; he served as Past Grand Knight and devoted countless hours creating friendships and supporting those in need. Additionally; Ray made significant contributions to the Metis Nation of Ontario as a Past Senator promoting heritage; unity; and values important to him. His time in Brampton was filled with enthusiastic participation in local sports where he coached minor hockey and lacrosse instilling both skills and valuable lessons in young athletes along the way. As part of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 15; he expressed gratitude for service members while emphasizing the importance of honoring those who worked hard for our safety.
Above all else; Ray took immense pride in being part of such a loving family. His influence will continue through generations whom he nurtured; supported; and adored. The impact he had on civic life combined with being an incredible husband; father; grandfather; and great-grandfather leaves lasting memories within his family friends; and community.
