Gillian Richardson (née Kyle) passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in her sleep on December 3, 2025. She was a loving mother to Kyle (Cathy), James, and Kerry (Jason) and a devoted wife to John. Her grandkids Charlotte and Jack adored her, calling her “Horsey Granny” due to the piggyback horsey rides she gave them when they were little.
Mom was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, to Helen and Phillip and was the youngest sister to Lorna and Brenda. A petite girl-“wee,” as they say back home-she was full of spirit and had a big personality. She excelled at sports from a young age, starting with playing cricket on the street, later earning letters in track (even holding a discus record for a time), field hockey, and eventually tennis in Canada. Some of her best memories were from annual girls’ tennis weekends in Muskoka with the Golden Slammers.
Education meant a lot to the family; it goes back at least as far as her granny graduating from the University of Cambridge. Mom graduated in Pharmacy from Queen’s University Belfast. It was during school that she met John Richardson; shortly after that, they got married and moved to Canada. Gillian worked at various pharmacies in Bracebridge where she loved chatting with customers as they came to pick up their prescriptions.
One of her greatest passions was music. As a teenager in Belfast, she met Van Morrison but didn’t think much of his looks or potential at the time. Her very first concert was The Beatles, whom she considered overrated, not understanding all the hype around them. However, she instantly fell for The Rolling Stones upon hearing them and thought Keith Richards was the best. Her favorite concert experience was an AC/DC show in 2008. Over the years, she enjoyed attending concerts by artists like Blue Rodeo, Kris Kristofferson, Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Beach Boys, Rush, Sloan, The Ramones, Pearl Jam, Jimmy Buffet-and many more! She also had a fondness for sports cars; notably her infamous “Batmobile,” a Mazda RX-8 that she might have once driven up to 200 km/h (but she’d say it was very carefully). She always kept one or two tennis rackets in her car along with her favorite music blasting away.
Mom’s love for life never faded as she aged. Instead of battling crowds for live shows or sporting events she loved so much, she found joy watching concerts online instead. She continued reading books voraciously (Stephen King being her favorite), chatting with friends across the pond while enjoying Roger Federer play tennis and enduring heartbreak after heartbreak from the Toronto Maple Leafs.
As we say our goodbyes to Mom today, let’s remember some of her sayings: “Always aim higher than you think you may get to” and “Treat everyone you meet as you would want to be treated.” Lastly-from her favorite song and mantra “Me and Bobby Mc Gee” by Kris Kristofferson (you’d better not call it Janis Joplin’s song): “Freedom’s just another word for nothin’ left to lose.”
The family invites visitors to Reynold’s Funeral Home on Friday, December 12 between 2pm-4pm and 6pm-8pm. A celebration of life will take place in springtime. In memory of Gillian-and also considering all those beloved cats over the years like Patrick O’Shaughnessy-please think about donating to Ontario SCPA and Humane Society.
