Some people have a way of lighting up every room they walk into, whose laughter becomes part of the memories we hold dear, and whose love shows in countless little ways every single day. Dorothy Mae Moore (née Symes) was truly one of those individuals.

On Thursday, July 30, 2026, Dorothy peacefully left us while she slept and joined Heaven. While our hearts are heavy with grief, we take solace in knowing she lived her life just as she wished-with passion, resolve, kindness, and a boundless love for her family and friends.

Dorothy was born on November 18, 1941, in Welland, Ontario. Growing up in a large family meant that life was always bustling with children to play with and stories to share. Those formative years crafted the remarkable woman everyone came to know-a woman who could strike up a conversation with anyone and never forgot a face.

Eventually, her family moved to Simcoe County where she met Ted, the love of her life. Together they built not only a home in Essa Township but also a joyful life filled with laughter, hard work, and unwavering love while raising their two sons, John and William. Their home always had an open-door policy because everyone knew they were welcome. Neighbors turned into lifelong friends through potluck dinners, coffee chats at the kitchen table, and enjoying Dorothy’s famous butter tarts and homemade pies shared generously with anyone who visited.

Dorothy tackled every stage of her life with excitement. She had a competitive spirit that led her to become an excellent marksman; she proudly earned an Ontario Championship Certificate as the top female shooter in 1982. Her dedication showed through everything she did-including her time at Radio Shack and General Electric-where she earned the title of “Top Picker” on the line-a testament to her hard work ethic.

Yet what will be remembered most about Dorothy isn’t just what she achieved-it’s how she made everyone feel.

She had this incredible talent for making people feel valued and important. Even years later after meeting someone once, she’d remember their name or ask about their family and make them smile as if no time had passed at all. Her friendships spanned across the county; each one was special to her.

Dorothy also found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She enjoyed digging in the garden, watching flowers bloom, and soaking up nature outside. This springtime season saw her helping plant a lovely garden full of colorful zinnias for her family to appreciate. It’s fitting that one of her final gifts was creating something so lively-a true reflection of who she was inside.

Above everything else though, Dorothy felt happiest when surrounded by loved ones. She was a devoted wife who took great pride in being a mother; there was no denying how much joy talking about her grandchildren brought to her eyes-a caring sister-and that wonderful friend everyone wishes they had by their side. Her love remained constant; she’d offer sincere advice whenever needed along with hugs that could warm any heart.

She is survived by her loving sons John Edward Moore (Daniela) and William Robert Moore (Lara); her dear brother Stuart Symes; along with six cherished grandchildren Ryan, Kailee, Rebecca, Abigail, Stephanie , and Caleb Moore-who will carry forward her stories , strength , and endless love forevermore.

Dorothy has now been reunited with Nelson Edward “Ted” Moore-the husband whom she adored-alongside siblings Pam , Jack , Roy , Robert , Betty , and Warren-all deeply missed by her.

The world feels quieter without Dorothy around. We’ll long for hearing laughters from those tales shared over meals ; miss indulging ourselves in desserts freshly baked from scratch ; feel loss when gazing upon beautiful gardens tended by hands full of grace -all these simple things that made any house come alive simply because she filled it with warmth.

The greatest comfort lies knowing all this abundant love didn’t vanish when leaving us behind. It continues through both children & grandchildren alike; echoes within friendships nurtured over years past-and certainly lives on through every buttery tart baked/each flower planted /every gathering where stories shall flow accompanied by smiles reminiscing fondly upon good old days spent together!

Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever held close within our hearts.

A drop-in celebration honoring Dorothy will take place on September 5th from 2:30 pm until 4:30 pm in Thornton.
