Durazo/Supplied Ron Kelly, the filmmaker who has passed away at the age of 96, started his career at CBC Television during the 1950s and created his final documentary in 2004, marking fifty years in the industry. Throughout those decades, he wrote, produced, and directed films across Britain and the United States before returning to Canada to work with both the National Film Board and the CBC. “Ron Kelly was part of an incredibly rich cultural moment for television in Canada where the CBC [was] creating programs, both drama and documentary, that were really innovative, as well as pushing the envelope in terms of addressing contemporary topics,” said Andrew Burke, a professor at the University of Winnipeg who specializes in the history of film and television in Canada. “Ron directed the very first episode of Wojeck (1966), a prime-time serial drama about a coroner,” he said. “That first episode that Ron directed, which won a number of awards at that year’s Canada Screen Awards, took on the question of Indigenous people moving to the city.” Mr. Kelly earned numerous accolades for his films both in Canada and Europe. His historical drama The Megantic Outlaw (1971), centered around a Robin Hood-like character from Quebec’s Eastern Townships during the late 19th century, garnered two Canadian Film Awards: Best TV Drama and Best Actress (Non-Feature). The following year saw Springhill (1972), his docudrama about Nova Scotia’s coal mining disaster from 1958 winning two more Canadian Film Awards while Mr. Kelly received an ACTRA nomination for best dramatic writer. Both films also received positive reviews. “It is a warm feeling to see a show that is so essentially Canadian,” Globe and Mail critic Blaik Kirby wrote about The Megantic Outlaw. “Remember the bad old days when we felt we had to pretend to be U. S. citizens to produce anything that had international potential.” Mr. Kelly directed several documentaries for CBC Television’s Telescope series. “The CBC was so good at these in the early 1960s,” said Prof. Burke, who studies film history. “Ron made a documentary on bullfighting in Mexico, one on jazz and another called Station 51, [after] a police station in Toronto. It was a kind of cinéma vérité, fly-on-the-wall documentary.” One notable film he created for Telescope back in 1966 featured Alanis Obomsawin; she was then an Abenaki activist advocating for a swimming pool for her community near Trois-Rivières. “Ron made a short documentary about that and Alanis was incredibly charismatic on screen, and people at NFB saw it on CBC and invited her for an interview,” Prof. Burke shared. “Her long career was triggered by this documentary that Ron made of her.” Ms. Obomsawin would go on to become an influential figure within Canadian filmmaking. Born Ronald Arthur Kelly on June 11, 1929, he grew up comfortably with his family in West Vancouver which included access to docks and sailboats or two. His father Robinson Kelly built up a successful trucking business while his mother Anita Berger managed their home. After finishing high school, Ron joined pre-med courses at UBC but an injury from rugby led him to spend considerable time recovering which shifted him away from medicine. While there , he produced The Tearaways – regarded controversial due its portrayal motorcycle culture happening during Britain’s early ’60s. Despite appearing mild today criticism emerged among British politicians regarding its content. This project did receive recognition winning award Cannes Television Festival held during same year – when Mr. Kelly turned just thirty-two!
