A Toronto man has been found guilty of second-degree murder for the death of a filmmaker, whose body was discovered in a trash compactor at a townhouse complex in Liberty Village in June 2023.

A jury determined that Khoa Tran was responsible for the killing of Reeyaz Habib, 53, who resided in the condo townhouse directly above him. The court heard that there had been an argument between them regarding barbeque smoke.

Isabelle Nguyen, Tran’s wife, was convicted as an accessory after the fact to manslaughter and for indignity to a human body.

Habib was found on June 8, 2023 near East Liberty Street and Western Battery Road, as reported by Toronto police.

Habib was a filmmaker and a graduate of the Canadian Film Centre (CFC). The center remembered him as a “gifted storyteller and filmmaker” who was completing his first feature film, Fat Lady Sriracha, both as writer and director.

“This is a great loss for the CFC and Canada’s creative community,” the center stated online following his passing.

“Reeyaz will be deeply missed by so many.”

According to their statement, Habib left behind a successful 15-year career on Bay Street to chase his dream in filmmaking.
