Bernard Hetzler (August 20, 1944 – January 4, 2026) passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 81. He was born in The Hague, Netherlands and moved to Canada in 1956. After finishing St. Paul High School in Winnipeg, Bernie earned a degree in Geology from the University of Manitoba. He quickly landed a job as a Senior Geologist, thanks to the experience he gained during summer jobs. His work took him to BC where he met Cathy in Smithers, BC. They got married in 1973 and enjoyed raising their four children in Surrey: Carolyn/Sister Mary Martha, Maureen (spouse: Iram and daughter Leah), Elizabeth (spouse: Jack and daughter Isla), and Robert.

Bernie lived life to the fullest. He loved being outdoors and took his family on amazing hiking and camping trips across many national parks. He had a passion for photography, music, golf, curling, and all things Dutch. With his great sense of humor, he found joy in teaching-especially ESL to the Karen people. He was proud of his patents and scientific research. All these experiences made for great stories that he loved sharing with anyone who would listen.

His faith and friendships meant a lot to him. It was through these connections that he traveled to Kenya and made three trips to Vietnam on medical missionary missions. He served on the Langley Hospital Board and participated in the Langley Community Choir. Additionally, he was an active member of St. Joseph’s Langley Knights of Columbus.

Prayers will be offered on Sunday, January 18, 6pm at St. Joseph’s, Langley (20676 Fraser Hwy). A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on January 19 at 10:30am.

The Holy Mass will be livestreamed and can be viewed by clicking the following link: https://www. legacystreaming. com/kearney/

Interment (Burial) will follow at Gardens of Gethsemani Cemetery, Surrey (15694 32 Ave) at 2:30pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Refugee Sponsorship and Resettlement
