With heavy hearts, we share the news of our father and cherished papa, Allan Bruce Houstoun, who passed away on Friday, April 3, 2026. He left us peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospice, surrounded by his family after bravely fighting cancer.
Al was born on March 9, 1941, in Surrey, England. He often said his love for travel started early when his family journeyed across the Atlantic Ocean on the Queen Mary to settle in Canada. Having lost his parents at a young age, he grew into a resilient and compassionate person, traits that defined him throughout his life. He was lucky to be welcomed by family and raised by his Aunt Lois, Uncle William, and their five children-Allan saw them as siblings. He shared many fond memories from his childhood spent on their farm.
Allan’s passion for reading and caring nature led him to become a teacher. Over more than three decades, he made a positive impact on countless students, colleagues, and families. It was during this time that Al met Gail Barbara Bell-a fellow teacher at Red Rock Public School-whom he married in 1966. They moved to Thunder Bay where they created a loving home while raising their four children and enjoying family camping trips and fishing adventures.
Al devoted much of his life to volunteering for various causes such as Trinity United Church community work, Boy Scouts, March of Dimes initiatives, local schools, and Habitat for Humanity projects. Even after retirement, he continued sharing his teaching spirit through involvement in 55+ programs. Known for his sense of fun and adventure, he delighted both children and grandchildren with his zest for life. In later years, he found a wonderful friend in Maureen Mannila who shared interests like bridge games, concerts dining out together as well as traveling; they were looking forward to new adventures once health allowed it.
Al will be remembered as an intelligent man full of wit and creativity who could turn something simple-a piece of paper-into something extraordinary. His humor kindness strength illuminated the lives of everyone around him.
He is preceded in death by his parents along with beloved wife Gail and great-granddaughter Nova.
He leaves behind children Bruce Domonique (Darren) Heather (Preston) Scott (Shay). His grandchildren Ashley (Jeremy) Pierce Rowan Luna Damion Zack Julian Toryn along with great-grandchildren Jedsun Tucker Sadie will miss him dearly too; not to mention Maureen Mannila her family plus the Houstoun Bell families countless other relatives close friends all remembering him fondly.
In line with Allan’s wishes cremation has occurred already A celebration honoring his life is set for Saturday May 23 2026 starting at eleven o’clock AM held at Trinity United Church located at thirty Algoma Street Thunder Bay ON
