Experts have confirmed that a tornado hit a community southeast of London, Ont., following severe thunderstorms earlier this week.

The Northern Tornadoes Project at Western University reports that initial investigations using videos and radar data have supplied the “necessary evidence” that a tornado touched down in Derwent on Tuesday.

Project researchers stated Wednesday in a social media post that a team will be visiting the area to assess the intensity and path of the tornado.

Director Dave Sills previously mentioned that although many people were impacted by the storm, damage has generally been minimal.

The Northern Tornadoes Project indicates that damage from another storm east of London was caused by an EF1 downburst with wind gusts reaching up to 145 km/h.

An EF1 is classified as a moderate storm where a strong of air rapidly descends from a thunderstorm and strikes the ground, producing destructive straight-line winds.

The first tornado of 2026 in Canada, which received the lowest rating on the intensity scale, occurred north of London earlier this month, according to the Northern Tornadoes Project.

This report by The Canadian Press was first May 21, 2026.
