Two well-known family dining spots that have been in the same Oakville location for over 20 years have shut down, leaving loyal patrons both surprised and upset as a major redevelopment project progresses.
Swiss Chalet and Harvey’s, situated on Cross Avenue near the Oakville GO station, are now closed, with customers confronted by an empty building and a note stating that the closure is part of the area’s planned redevelopment.
“Dear valued guests,” reads the notice at the drive-thru window. “This location has closed as part of the area redevelopment. Come enjoy the same great taste and service you love, at locations just minutes away.”
The sign encourages customers to visit three other Swiss Chalet/Harvey’s locations still operating in Oakville.
However, for many long-time patrons, this closure was unexpected.
Several users expressed their disappointment on social media about not having a chance to say goodbye to staff members who had worked there for many years.
“It really was a family place,” one Facebook commenter noted. “We knew the staff and they were always very friendly. Now they’re gone. I feel like I lost some friends.”
Others pointed out that this restaurant combo was a favorite spot for families because it offered something appealing to everyone.
Both Swiss Chalet and Harvey’s are operated by Recipe Unlimited Corporation (previously known as Cara Operations), and these two Canadian chains often run co-located or nearby restaurants across Canada.
“This is a sad moment. We used to go with our kids almost weekly. It was our favourite location,” another commenter shared.
The restaurant on Cross Avenue was one of several businesses set to vanish as the area transitions into a high-density, transit-oriented community around Oakville GO station.
Nearby establishments like Mc Donald’s and other commercial properties are also likely to be affected as redevelopment continues.
The Midtown Oakville Transit-Oriented Community (TOC) is among the largest redevelopment initiatives in the town’s history. The blueprint includes 11 high-rise towers, about 6,880 new residential units, retail spaces, offices, parks, daycare centers and enhanced cycling pathways around Cross Avenue and Argus Road.
This initiative is being spearheaded by a collaboration between the provincial government and developer Distrikt Developments while Ontario strives to create more housing close to major transit hubs.
However, the redevelopment has drawn controversy.
The province expedited progress on this project in 2026 using Minister’s Zoning Orders (MZOs), allowing them to override local planning decisions. This move faced backlash from residents and community groups worried about project scale , traffic effects , and whether Oakville can handle thousands of newcomers.
The approved plan accommodates 11 towers across four development blocks surrounding Oakville GO. Early proposals suggested buildings reaching up to nearly 60 stories , but negotiations between provincial authorities , the developer, and Town officials led to revised heights closerto38 stories.
The transformation won’t happen overnight.
Midtown Oakville’s makeover is projectedto take decades , with construction happening in phases. Initial site prep work should begin within thenext few years , while significant constructionactivity may commence laterinthisdecade.
Eventually , Cross Avenueand Argus Roadwill be redesigned fromtheir current low-rise commercial setting intoan urban streetscape featuringnew roads , parks, and cycling routes.
