A surge of home break-ins in Halton is being tied to organized crime groups that are taking advantage of the area’s vast trail networks and wooded ravines.

Halton police are investigating organized crime rings that use the local trails and forests to survey and rob homes before disappearing back into the foliage.

Authorities report that these groups quickly shift between neighborhoods, breaking rear windows or doors to steal cash, jewelry, and identification while homeowners are away. By concentrating on houses near green spaces, the suspects wear dark clothing and carry backpacks to blend in with hikers or passersby, allowing them to strike multiple homes in a single day and escape through the woods where tracking becomes more challenging.

Investigators indicate that the targeted houses usually back onto or are very close to wooded areas, ravines, and walking paths. In many instances, entry is gained by forcefully breaking rear doors or windows using tools.

Police suspect that organized crime factions are behind these events. These groups tend to move rapidly from one neighborhood to another-often within the same town-hitting several homes in a brief timeframe before moving on. The culprits typically dress in dark clothes, wear gloves, cover their faces, and carry backpacks, which helps them blend in with pedestrians on residential streets and trail systems.

Once they gain access inside, thieves quickly search bedrooms and other spaces for cash, jewelry, luxury items, and government-issued IDs. Most break-ins happen within minutes; suspects often flee through nearby green areas, complicating detection efforts. These incidents occur during both daytime and nighttime hours.

Tackling residential break-ins is a priority for HRPS. To address this issue, police have increased patrols in affected neighborhoods-especially those bordering trail systems and green spaces-and have deployed extra investigative resources. Investigators are actively reviewing surveillance footage, canvassing for video evidence, and analyzing patterns as their investigations continue.
