The Ontario government announced on Thursday that it has issued four Minister’s Zoning Orders (MZO) to create a transit-oriented community (TOC) close to the Oakville GO Station.

This initiative is expected to bring more than 6,800 new homes, generate nearly 4,000 jobs during construction, and provide about 400 long-term jobs in Midtown Oakville.

The province is collaborating with Distrikt Developments, a Toronto-based company, to develop the Oakville TOC.

The goal of the Oakville TOC aligns with the town’s objective to fulfill its commitment of delivering 33,000 homes by the year 2031.

“As a key partner in delivering the Oakville TOC, we have been working closely with the Town of Oakville and value their feedback as we work on making refinements to the TOC design, including opportunities for adjustments to the building heights to better reflect local input,” said Acting Minister of Infrastructure Todd Mc Carthy in a statement.

“We look forward to continuing to work with the town as part of our government’s plan to deliver faster, more reliable and seamless transit with more housing, jobs and community amenities near transit stations across the Greater Golden Horseshoe.”

This announcement marks another step towards creating a community focused around the GO station since development proposals were submitted at town hall in 2024.

Ontario has put over $44 million into Oakville for housing and community infrastructure through both the Building Faster Fund and the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program.

The plans involve constructing this community using land along Cross Avenue, South Service Road, and Argus Road.

The province aims to establish TOCs along its subway and GO/Light Rail Transit networks throughout the Greater Golden Horseshoe area to facilitate new housing options and support job growth near transit stations.
