Amber Driedger from Oakville is looking back on her impressive performance at the Boston Marathon, where she finished 19th in the women’s 65-69 age group with a time of 3:41:11. This achievement wrapped up a winter racing season filled with an active schedule across North America and several standout age-group finishes.

Boston Marathon finish

Driedger participated in the 2026 Boston Marathon on April 20, a renowned global running event that attracted nearly 30,000 runners from around the world.

She describes the race as both tough and unforgettable, highlighting the challenging Newton Hills section that runs between about miles 16 and 21, which features the well-known Heartbreak Hill climb.

Driedger found the course to be much hillier than she had anticipated and noted that the mix of elevation changes and enthusiastic crowd support made this race one of a kind for her.

“You can’t train for that in the Prairies,” she points out, also mentioning how immense the event was-from packed athlete buses to cheering crowds lining almost every kilometer of Boston’s route.

Race week in Boston

Driedger’s journey to Boston started under tough circumstances due to an ice storm while traveling from Manitoba.

She recounts how she and her group initially sought accommodations in Winnipeg on the night before their departure but couldn’t find any available hotel rooms. This led them to make an early morning drive through winter weather conditions.

The flight was delayed for about an hour on tarmac due to de-icing procedures, but they had wisely built in extra travel time to ensure they wouldn’t miss any race preparations.

Once they arrived in Boston, she spent the weekend getting acclimated to the city while engaging in pre-race activities like short runs near her hotel and visiting the bustling Marathon Expo where she picked up her bib number.

Driedger also enjoyed a shakeout run through Boston Common where she saw large groups of runners gearing up for race day. She remarked that it felt electric seeing so many athletes moving around just days before competition.

“It was just amazing to see the amount of runners already out there just doing their shakeout run the day before the race,” she shares. “Really something to see so many runners in one place.”

A trip up to Prudential Centre offered her a stunning view of Boston, including her first sighting of Newton Hills which would later become significant during her toughest moments during the marathon.

Race day experience

On race morning, Driedger mentioned that athletes took buses from Boston Common out to Hopkinton, roughly 26 miles away from downtown. She described long waits and crowded staging areas leading up to staggered wave starts for participants.

“The fantastic crowd support was wild. Every mile of the course, there are crowds cheering for you when you run past,” Driedger remarks.

Despite some congestion at start time, she managed a good position at front corral within her wave which helped avoid clusters of runners right at beginning stages.

Driedger mentions officials even encouraged her to move closer toward starting line for better positioning.Amber Driedger of Oakville running in the Boston Marathon, focused on the course with other runners spread out behind her.Amber Driedger of Oakville competes inthe Boston Marathonon April20,2026, maintainingherpacethroughthecourseasotherrunnersfollowbehind. Driedger believes this initial positioning greatly influenced her overall performance by allowing smoother navigation during those opening kilometers.

“It was just a tremendous wayto start because you’re not tryingto weaveinbetweenotherrunnersthatyou’reracingwith,”she says!

The track quickly turned more demanding than she’d foreseen with rolling hills appearing earlier than expected plus intensifying throughout middle sections of competition.
