BOSTON – According to the U. S. Attorney’s Office, a Canadian man who has been residing in the United States for many years has been charged with voting unlawfully.

The 40-year-old defendant is facing one count of illegal voting as a non-citizen and another count for knowingly casting a fraudulent ballot.

Prosecutors mentioned in a news release that the individual became a permanent resident in February 1987 and had been living in Saugus, Mass., which is just north of Boston.

They claim that he filled out official registration forms stating he was a U. S. citizen and voted in several federal elections.

If found guilty, he could face between one to five years behind bars and fines ranging from $100,000 to $250,000.

Online court records indicate that he is set to appear in court this June.

This report by The Canadian Press was first May 21, 2026.
