Halton Regional Police are urging car owners to be more vigilant after a recent spike in vehicle thefts.
As per the police crime map, 25 cars were stolen in Oakville and Burlington over the last week.
A total of seven vehicles were reported stolen on one day, Sunday, May 3.
The police indicate that Toyotas have been the most frequently targeted models.
“Thieves are getting more sophisticated, but there are simple steps you can take right now to protect your vehicle,” police said.
Some recommended actions by the police to enhance your car’s security include:
Install an after-market GPS tracker (considered the best deterrent) Park in a locked garage whenever possible Block your vehicle in with a second (lower-value) car Use a steering wheel lock Add an on-board diagnostic (OBD) port to prevent thieves from accessing the car’s computer system Install a kill switch, which is an anti-theft device that disrupts the flow of electricity or fuel to the engine, preventing the vehicle from starting
