The competition for the next mayor of Mississauga is tight between former mayor Bonnie Crombie and current mayor Carolyn Parrish, according to a new poll.

Both Parrish and Crombie have garnered 35 percent support among voters who are committed or leaning toward voting, as indicated by a survey from national public opinion research firm Liaison Strategies. If the election were held today on October 26, each candidate would receive around 26 percent of the votes, based on the poll’s findings.

Other candidates like Dipika Damerla and Alvin Tedjo are polling at 13 percent and nine percent respectively, according to Liaison.

CBC has reached out to both Crombie and Parrish for their reactions to these latest figures.

Liaison surveyed a random sample of 1,000 residents in Mississauga through landlines and cellphones between August 11 and August 12. Participants answered questions via interactive voice recordings, with results adjusted to reflect the demographics from the 2021 census. The poll carries a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points, with a confidence level of 19 times out of 20.

When asked about the biggest issue facing Mississauga, respondents identified transit (19 percent), taxes (17 percent), and housing (16 percent) as their top concerns.

The rivalry between Crombie and Parrish is heating up as they exchange comments on social media regarding Parrish’s choice to abstain from voting on a council motion aimed at creating a one-year moratorium on data centres.

Regarding approval ratings for Parrish’s performance as mayor, only 42 percent expressed disapproval while 38 percent approved her efforts, according to the poll results.

In an interesting twist, about 39 percent said that an endorsement from Premier Doug Ford would make them less likely to support any mayoral candidate he backs. In contrast, just 15 percent felt it would increase their likelihood of voting for that candidate while another 35 percent stated it wouldn’t influence their decision at all.

Ford endorsed Parrish during a news conference back in March, claiming he would “send an army” to stop Crombie from winning the mayorship.

This week has also seen headlines regarding Ontario’s Progressive Conservative Party after reports surfaced suggesting they spent almost $3,000 on stays at two luxury resorts in Jamaica “to spy on” Crombie following her ascent as Ontario Liberal leader. Ford stated he does not condone such actions and was unaware they were taking place.
