This recognition highlights the efforts of both the City and its community in encouraging active lifestyles.

The City of Mississauga has been awarded the title of Ontario’s Most Active Community for the 2026 Particip ACTION Community Challenge, sponsored by Novo Nordisk. As part of this accolade, the City will receive $5,000 to fund physical activity and sports programs in the area. This honor showcases the City’s dedication to promoting a healthy lifestyle for residents of every age and ability.

Particip ACTION is a nationwide program that motivates individuals and communities across Canada to engage in physical activities through recreation, sports, and daily movement.

The Particip ACTION Community Challenge was an excellent chance to display all the ways residents can stay active in Mississauga while emphasizing the City’s ongoing commitment to recreation, sports, and healthy living. This initiative aligns closely with the City’s Healthy City Strategy aimed at supporting active living through various programs, services, and infrastructure designed to enhance health and wellness for all citizens.

Earlier this summer, the City urged residents to join in on the Particip ACTION Community Challenge and explore new ways to be more active during June and beyond. This initiative served as a practical and inspiring reminder for everyone about opportunities to move more throughout June and throughout the year. It became a city-wide movement with participation from residents, community organizations, and City staff contributing significantly. The City’s campaign saw impressive results with over 137,000 participants engaged via 48 community groups. Additionally, more than 4,600 activities were organized that reached nearly 122,000 residents during June.

The activities featured kick-off events and programs connecting residents with free or low-cost options available throughout summer such as:

Fresh Air Fitness – A program led by the City that attracted over 1,000 participants across two events at Celebration Square in June. Classes will continue until September 9 for any interested residents. Get Outside Guide for Older Adults – A resource created to assist older adult residents along with their support organizations in finding outdoor activity opportunities including parks, trails, outdoor fitness equipment locations, multi-use sport courts, and recreational programs available in Mississauga. Sauga Summer Pass – Offering free access to swimming pools, fitness facilities, and transit services for youth aged 12 to 16 during summer months.

Mississauga’s dedication to keeping its citizens active is an ongoing effort year-round. Key highlights include:

Community-driven initiatives like after-school cricket sessions, running clinics, races, and outdoor fitness classes. School-based programs such as bike safety workshops. The expansion of the Library of Things allowing people to borrow items like pickleball paddles, paddles for cricket, badminton gear, and disc golf equipment along with lifejackets. A collaboration with Equip Sportand Jumpstartto place sport equipment lockersin30 parks citywide. The reopening of two renovated parks, Gulleden Parkand Anaka Parkto make active living easierfor everyone.

In2025, Misissaugawas nameda national finalist inthe Particip ACTION Community Challenge. This year’s honor as Ontario’s Most Active Community illustratesthe growing engagement fromresidents, their organizations, andcommunity partners.
