Two out of four Brampton politicians involved in a hotel spending controversy have stated they will repay the money fully but declined to answer questions about resigning. Meanwhile, others have remained quiet on an issue that has cast a shadow over Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s party.
The Ontario NDP is urging the province’s Integrity Commissioner to look into the hotel expenses of Hardeep Grewal, who represents Brampton East and serves as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation, along with Brampton South MPP Prabmeet Singh Sarkaria.
Grewal was among several Brampton MPPs criticized last week after it came to light that members of Ontario PC spent around $121,000 in taxpayer funds for stays at Toronto hotels despite being able to commute from home.
Additionally, he’s facing criticism for spending public funds on ads in a newspaper owned by his father. These included full-page promotions for events like a summer BBQ. Ontario NDP leader Marit Styles has requested an investigation by the Integrity Commissioner.
NDP data indicates that Grewal spent over $27,000 on hotel accommodations from 2023 to 2026, while Brampton Centre MPP and Associate Minister of Women’s Social and Economic Opportunity Charmaine Williams claimed more than $15,000 for Toronto hotels. Amarjot Sandhu from Brampton West expensed $4,027 while Graham Mc Gregor billed taxpayers $2,086.
INsauga. com contacted all four implicated Brampton MPPs regarding this scandal; only Grewal and Mc Gregor replied with identical statements.
“I will be reimbursing the legislature in full,” both Grewal and Mc Gregor stated separately to INsauga. com.
Grewal acknowledged his mistake regarding advertising through his family connection and mentioned that these ads were in The Punjabi Post – “a popular ethnic news outlet in Brampton-a community with a large Punjabi speaking population.”

“Before advertising, I should have consulted with the Integrity Commissioner and have since reached out to her office for advice,” he explained in a statement to INsauga. com.
However, neither Grewal nor Mc Gregor addressed specific inquiries about their expenditures-such as which hotels they stayed at or how long they were there-and why they chose taxpayer-funded accommodations while living locally in Brampton.

They also didn’t clarify if they would continue serving as Parliamentary Assistant to Sarkaria or stay as Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism.
According to NDP data, Grewal was the highest spender among Ontario PC MPPs involved in this issue.
Toronto Willowdale MPP Stan Cho resigned as minister of tourism, culture and gaming after charging nearly $16,000 for hotel stays on taxpayers’ dime. He will remain as an MPP despite recent reports revealing he expensed close to $100,000 for food through his riding association-this includes a meeting costing $6,970 at a Blue Jays game.
Minister of Sport Neil Lumsden announced he will also step down from cabinet as well as the legislature next month due to this spending scandal.
The total amount billed by all implicated Brampton MPPs comes up to roughly $49,253 against taxpayers; however none appear ready to resign from their positions within cabinet roles.
This situation arose after Ford’s own government advised members book hotel rooms in Toronto using taxpayer money when night sessions at the legislature were planned according to reports.
The premier has expressed outrage since news broke about these expenses stating all MPs must repay every cent of what he called “unacceptable” spending. He hasn’t responded directly when asked if he still supports those involved from Brampton during media interactions post-scandal revelations.
This past May saw protests against Grewal alongside other local representatives who voted against Bill 113-a proposal put forth by the NDP aimed at removing part of harmonized sales tax applied on certain food items along with non-alcoholic drinks too.
Additonally, in 2025, Grewal noted that both he & his family became targets due racial slurs & threats whilst visiting one popular tourist town located within Ontario area.
