A man has died following a police shooting in Mississauga early Saturday morning, according to Peel police.

Officers were called around 12:30 a. m. to reports of a domestic disturbance near Paula Court in Mississauga, stated Peel police Cst. Tyler Bell-Morena at the scene.

A woman contacted authorities saying her husband had left their home with a firearm, said Special Investigations Unit spokesperson Monica Hudon during a news briefing.

When officers arrived, they found the man and confronted him after “a short foot pursuit” close to Fifth Line and Dundas Street, Bell-Morena explained.

At that moment, there was “an exchange of gunfire,” Hudon noted. Four officers shot at the man, hitting him multiple times; he was pronounced dead at the scene, she reported.

Hudon mentioned that five SIU investigators and three forensic investigators are currently on site. Anyone with information is encouraged to reach out to the SIU or submit any evidence via their website.

Bell-Morena indicated that the man was known to law enforcement and two firearms were recovered from the scene-one used during the encounter with police and another discarded nearby.

The man did not have a license for gun ownership, he added.

The Special Investigations Unit, the province’s police watchdog, has taken over the investigation into the incident, said Peel police (CBC)

No officers were injured in this incident; however, one bullet passed through an officer’s cap.

“That’s how close that this came to an incident where I would be standing here informing you of the death of one of our officers,” he remarked.

There’s no ongoing threat in the community right now, but residents can expect a heavy police presence due to how “convoluted” the scene is, he mentioned.

“This is a very large scene spanning over several streets in this subdivision, so you can anticipate a police presence here well into the rest of [Saturday] and into Sunday,” he said.

Residents are advised to stay clear of areas marked off with police tape.
