Traffic is severely delayed on Highway 401 in Mississauga due to a crash that resulted in the deaths of two individuals.
The Ontario Provincial Police reported that the incident occurred just before 9 a. m. in the eastbound express lanes near Dixie Road.
A rear-end collision involving two passenger vehicles happened as traffic was coming to a stop.
Tragically, two adults lost their lives at the scene: an 80-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman who were both passengers.
They hailed from Cambridge.
According to OPP, they were riding in the vehicle that got hit from behind.
Three additional people sustained injuries and were taken to hospital, but the OPP did not specify the severity of those injuries.
An Ornge air ambulance responded and landed directly on the highway to assist with the situation.
The eastbound express lanes of Highway 401 are currently closed at Mississauga Road.
The transition from collector lanes to express is also blocked off.
Shortly after 10 a. m., OPP stated that vehicles trapped in the express lanes would soon be allowed to pass through the area.
The southbound route from Highway 410 to Highway 401 is completely shut down as well.
There’s significant traffic congestion in the vicinity, and images from traffic cameras indicate that both eastbound collector lanes and westbound lanes are facing delays too.
