Residents throughout southern Ontario are being alerted that smoke from forest fires in northwestern Ontario is leading to poor air quality and decreased visibility across many parts of the region.

Environment Canada reports that smoky conditions are impacting areas such as Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Milton, Halton Hills, Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Markham, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Aurora, Newmarket, Barrie, Guelph, Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, London, St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Welland and Windsor.
The agency warns that low air quality may continue into Thursday in certain areas as wildfire smoke keeps moving across southern Ontario.
Health officials caution that as smoke levels rise so do health risks. Residents are advised to limit their time outside and think about postponing or altering outdoor sports and events until the situation improves.
People exposed to the smoke might notice common symptoms like irritation in the eyes, nose and throat along with headaches and mild coughing. More serious reactions can include wheezing or chest pain as well as severe coughing. Anyone with serious symptoms or a medical emergency should seek immediate medical help.
The individuals most at risk from wildfire smoke include seniors, pregnant individuals, infants and young children along with people who have existing health issues or chronic conditions. Those working outdoors should also be cautious; these groups are advised to avoid intense outdoor activities and consult a doctor if symptoms arise.
Officials recommend keeping windows and doors shut as much as possible to prevent smoke from entering homes. To enhance indoor air quality residents can use high-quality furnace filters or certified portable air purifiers that filter fine particles effectively.
If you must spend extended periods outdoors it’s wise to wear a well-fitting N95 mask or similar respirator to help minimize exposure to harmful smoke particles.
Authorities encourage everyone to check on neighbors and family members who might be more susceptible to the effects of wildfire smoke while this air quality advisory remains active.
