Two lanes of Highway 407 at the Mississauga-Brampton border were shut down to traffic late Monday afternoon after a car lost control on the wet pavement, crashed through a guardrail, and ended up in tall grass, according to police.

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt noted that it’s lucky there were no serious injuries from this single-vehicle accident, which happened in the eastbound lanes near Mississauga Road around 3:30 p. m. while “some pretty significant rain” was falling in the area.

He mentioned that the driver, who was alone in the vehicle, was taken to the hospital just as a precaution.

Schmidt explained that the car spun out, hit the guardrail, and then traveled quite a distance into the deep grass beside the toll highway before finally coming to rest.

“He didn’t roll over, but he certainly went for quite the ride,” said the seasoned OPP officer in a brief video shared on social media (see below).

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt remarked that the driver of the vehicle was fortunate to avoid serious injuries.

Video footage captured showed the upright vehicle far off the highway in a grassy ditch just before being pulled back onto the road by a tow truck.

Schmidt indicated that police aimed to have both lanes reopened by around 4 p. m.

This incident should act as a warning for other drivers, police advised.

“Anytime it’s raining … always be aware of conditions and how quickly things can change regarding losing control and visibility,” said Schmidt.

OPP has repeatedly emphasized that drivers need to maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, especially during rainy weather, and keep an eye out for standing water on highways.

“The last thing you want is to speed through a large pool of water without knowing what’s underneath it-especially if there’s debris-and you definitely don’t want your vehicle to hydroplane,” police stated earlier.

Driver lost control in heavy rain. Spun out on the EB #Hwy407 approaching Mississauga Rd. Struck the guide rail and entered the grassy ditch. He was taken to hospital as a precaution. Two right lanes closed for recovery of the car. Expect to have all lanes reopened by 4pm. ^ks pic. twitter. com/Fm R2Xfbv7X
