The tragic death of a 13-year-old boy who was hit by a GO train on Wednesday afternoon in Mississauga serves as “an important and sobering reminder of the importance of rail safety and how dangerous trains are,” according to transit officials.

Metrolinx, the provincial agency that manages GO Transit, stated that “as with all serious incidents, there will be a full investigation” into the events leading to the teen’s death. Police reported he was riding a motorized bike with a friend when he was struck and killed by the westbound train around 2:45 p. m. in Mississauga’s south end.

The incident occurred at a grade crossing on the Lakeshore West line between Long Branch GO and Port Credit GO stations.

“This is a tragic incident, and our condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the person who was struck,” Metrolinx mentioned in its statement. “Our first priority is the safety of the public and our staff. We thank all first responders for their quick and diligent work at the scene.

“As with all serious incidents,” continued the statement, “there will be a full investigation. While Peel Regional Police are still looking into this matter, it highlights how vital rail safety is and just how dangerous trains can be. With more trains running and more people traveling across our region each day, being aware at rail crossings is crucial. For drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike, staying alert to your surroundings and recognizing signs can help keep you safe.”

Peel Regional Police Const. Tyler Bell-Morena told reporters at the scene near Alexandra Avenue and Fourth Street on Wednesday evening that “this is an absolutely horrible situation for the family involved.”

In an email to INsauga. com, Bell-Morena noted that the young boy and his friend “were riding motorized bikes in the area. The preliminary information suggests that the boy who was struck went around the railway crossing barrier before being hit by a westbound train. Sadly, he died on scene.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford took to social media Thursday morning to express his condolences to the family of the teen.

“I was very sad to hear of the death of the boy who was struck by a train yesterday in Mississauga. My sincere condolences go out to his family and loved ones,” wrote Premier Ford in an X post.

This fatality marks only the second time in four years that a child has been hit by a GO train in Mississauga.

Mitchell Nwabuoku, aged 4, lost his life after being hit by another train heading west from Dixie GO station on July 26, 2022.

The young girl had been playing outside chasing butterflies when she followed a footpath that led directly onto tracks used as shortcuts towards Dundas Street.

Soon after this incident fencing has been put up at that location.
