Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish has announced her intention to seek re-election one more time – and things could get quite interesting if the city’s former mayor and ex-Ontario Liberal Party Leader Bonnie Crombie decides to run again later this year.

Crombie, who stepped down as leader of the Ontario Liberals on Wednesday, effective immediately, hasn’t disclosed any specific plans for her political future. In a statement released to the media, she mentioned that she’s “looking forward to spending more time with my family, including welcoming my first grandchild, while giving the party the space it needs to move forward with new leadership.”

However, encouraged by a poll from last October, Crombie stated previously that she wouldn’t dismiss another bid for Mississauga’s mayoralty in Canada’s seventh-largest city. She took over from long-serving Mississauga mayor Hazel Mc Callion in 2014 and was re-elected twice before resigning in January 2024 to lead Ontario’s Liberal Party.

Parrish, a seasoned politician who spent 13 years on Mississauga city council alongside an equal amount of time as an MP in Ottawa, won a byelection for mayor in June 2024 after succeeding Crombie.

The Mississauga mayor told INsauga. com during an interview late in 2025 that she planned to serve just one more term in office.

Parrish also expressed that she wouldn’t mind if Crombie considered returning to the Mississauga mayoral role – as indicated by Crombie herself.

She described such a situation as “a fabulous challenge,” adding “I’d love it. We don’t think alike.”

“… I would look forward to a debate with Bonnie Crombie.”

Shortly after Crombie told in October that she wouldn’t rule out running for Mississauga mayor again in 2026, Parrish noted that she received several calls asking her thoughts about the potential of facing off against another veteran politician from Mississauga.

Parrish told INsauga. com at that moment her response was straightforward and clear.

“I’d say, ‘well that’s fine, that’s fine. What do you expect me to do? I’m going to run harder’.”

Crombie officially resigned today as leader of the Liberal Party but had made up her mind last September after receiving only 57 percent support during a leadership vote at the party’s annual general meeting.

The former Mississauga mayor faced significant defeat against Ontario Premier Doug Ford during a snap provincial election called last February.

A survey conducted between October 22 and 23 by Liaison Strategies indicated that if an election were held for Mississauga’s mayor then, Crombie would narrowly win against Parrish (38 percent versus 34 percent). This poll included responses from 800 voters in Mississauga.

The next municipal election is scheduled for October 26, 2026.
