The police watchdog in Ontario is looking into an incident where a Toronto officer fired their weapon during a carjacking investigation in Mississauga on Wednesday night.
According to the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Toronto police were probing a carjacking that took place at a parking lot close to Tomken Road and Dundas Street E. around 9 p. m. on Wednesday.
Officers “conducted a takedown” after two suspects approached a vehicle that was being examined.
There was “an interaction” with one man, which resulted in an officer discharging his firearm, as stated by the SIU. That man ran away from the scene and hasn’t been found yet.
It’s unclear if the man was hit by gunfire. The second suspect has been taken into custody, according to the SIU.
As per the Special Investigations Unit Act, the SIU has been assigned to investigate since an officer fired at someone.
The agency mentioned that three investigators and two forensic specialists are looking into what happened during this incident.

No officers were reported injured at the scene, according to Toronto police.
