This weekend marks the start of the annual Honda Indy at its new location, and there are several key road closures that Ontario drivers should be aware of.

The Ontario Honda Dealers Indy will take place in Markham from Friday, Aug. 14 through Sunday, Aug. 16.

“For the first time ever, Indy Cars will race through our city – bringing world-class speed, excitement and community pride,” said Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti on X.

The temporary track spans over three kilometers with twelve turns and will run close to Markham’s downtown area between Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, the Unionville GO tracks, and Hwy. 407.

The race will “transform the streets of our city into a car racing crucible, testing the limits of some of the world’s fastest car drivers and welcoming the world to watch it all unfold,” Scarpitti said in a news conference.

What events are happening during Honda Indy weekend?

Kicking off on Friday, Aug. 14 is opening day featuring drivers’ first practice session, qualifying rounds, and a free fan day that includes an autograph opportunity.

Spectators who donate voluntarily to Make-A-Wish Canada can enjoy free general admission for Free Fan Friday events which feature contests, off-track entertainment and reserved seating during practice sessions.

The first day wraps up with The Children’s Breakfast Clubs’ Ride The Track cycling event where participants can ride alongside fellow supporters raising awareness for community programs.

On Saturday, Aug. 15 there’ll be another practice session followed by final qualifying leading into an evening NASCAR Canada Series race.

A performance by Ontario-based rock band The Glorious Sons is also scheduled that day.

The last day of festivities is Sunday, Aug. 16 which includes the highlight – a main event with a noon race spanning ninety laps along with various championship races throughout morning and afternoon hours.

How can I get to Honda Indy?

Even with several road closures taking place, getting to Ontario Honda Dealers Indy remains easy via GO train or specific driving routes.

If you’re taking public transit, hop on the Stouffville train heading towards Unionville GO station; children aged twelve and under can ride free when accompanied by an adult with a ticket.

If you’re driving over , use Hwy.407 ETR; whether coming from east or west , exit onto Warden Avenue then head north towards Enterprise Boulevard.

To save money on your trip , Ontario drivers are encouraged to use their Hwy.407 ETR transponder.

Drivers visiting from outside Ontario may opt for pay-as-you-go service using Next Pass.
