Markham is gearing up for two exciting events this May, spotlighting the history and impact of the Indo-Caribbean community.
The Toronto Arya Samaj will host its second annual Run for Heritage 5K on May 3 at the Vedic Cultural Centre located on 14th Avenue. This event will be followed by their 28th annual Caribbean Indian Heritage program on May 23.
May has been recognized by Ontario as South Asian Heritage Month.
According to the organizers, funds raised from the run will help preserve artifacts and documents related to the history of indentured laborers in the Caribbean during British colonial rule from 1838 to 1917.
The event on May 3 included a family-friendly run and walk, featuring local vendors and live entertainment.
“We’ve already surpassed our participant registrations from last year and are still getting calls from vendors who want to support our community,” said Sanjay Kumar, founder and chair of the Run for Heritage.
This fundraiser helps support the larger heritage event happening later in the month, which will showcase historical exhibits – some dating back over a century – along with performances and cultural activities.
Varun Kumar, chair of the Vedic Cultural Centre’s South Asian Heritage Committee, mentioned that this initiative aims to unite community members while celebrating shared history.
The event on May 23 will feature a guided exhibit about indentureship history, as well as music, dance performances, and a fashion showcase highlighting styles from the 1800s through today.
Local artists and performers are expected to participate in programming designed for both education and cultural celebration.
