Briarcliff has a new mayor after the city council’s meeting on Tuesday night. Robert (Bob) Markham was appointed and will hold the position until November 2026.

This position opened up when Mayor Martin Nicholson resigned during the council meeting in March, stating that he “can’t fix the city.” The official vacancy was announced at the April 8 council meeting, and news of the opening spread through various media shortly after.

Three candidates expressed interest in the role: former Mayor Keith Lewis, Joshua Williamson, and now Mayor Bob Markham. By early May, both Lewis and Williamson had withdrawn their applications, leaving Markham as the sole candidate. His oath of office was officially taken and certified at Tuesday’s meeting by Renate Schmitt, who was acting mayor and treasurer/recorder.

During Tuesday’s meeting, the city also declared a vacancy for Council position Ward 1 Seat 1, which represents residents in Summit and part of the Mobile home section. Residents from that area can apply to fill this seat starting June 10th.

The Briarcliff Water Recreational Improvement District #1 is scheduled to meet on Friday at 3 PM to appoint a new treasurer. With several openings available on the board, interested residents are encouraged to attend this meeting at 945 Scenic Drive in Briarcliff.
