The Township of Southwold has declared a state of emergency after heavy rainfall led to flooding and closed multiple roads in southwestern Ontario.

Located south of London, the township announced the emergency on Friday morning, stating that public safety is its highest concern as crews work to address the flooding throughout the municipality.

In a news alert, officials warned residents not to drive through flooded areas and mentioned that public works teams are keeping an eye on conditions as water levels begin to drop.

Several roads remain shut down, including parts of Burwell Road, Mc Diarmid Line, Oneida Road, Mill Road, Scotch Line, Hunter Line and Union Road. The intersection of Sixth Line and Lawrence Line is also experiencing flooding.

Repairs are set to start Saturday morning with crews arriving at 6 a. m., according to the township.

Emergency repair work is currently happening on Thomas Road and in Fingal; full restorations may take up to two weeks.

Residents dealing with basement flooding should place damaged items by the roadside for collection. The township plans to share details about pickup on Monday.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for much of southwestern Ontario, indicating that some regions have already received between 50 and 100 mm of rain and could see more before this system moves out later Friday.

Southwold is at least the third Ontario community to declare a state of emergency due to flooding within the last week.
