Authorities are looking into a rise in overdose cases in London, Ont., after a person reportedly gave out a free substance downtown.

Emergency services received 39 calls related to overdoses between 8 a. m. Wednesday and 8 a. m. Thursday, with several individuals needing medical attention, according to London police.

Investigators suspect that a possibly “toxic supply of illegal substances” may be present in the area.

The increase in overdose incidents was first noted shortly after 11:15 a. m. Wednesday when officers responded to reports of multiple non-fatal overdoses downtown.

Authorities found out that a suspect driving through the downtown area had given out a free substance to several people before leaving.

A number of those who took the substance later overdosed and needed medical help.

The investigation has been handed over to the criminal investigation division of the London Police Service, where officers are trying to trace the source of the substance and identify those involved.

Officials are advising anyone who may have taken the substance not to use it and to reach out to police.

Residents are also encouraged to share any dashcam footage or surveillance video from downtown that could aid investigators.

Authorities remind everyone about the dangers linked with illegal drugs and encourage people not to use substances alone, carry naloxone if possible, and call 911 right away if an overdose is suspected.

Under the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act, individuals seeking emergency assistance during an overdose may get some legal protection.

The investigation is still ongoing.
