Mapping Changes: Lake Ontario or Lake America?

Google Maps has been updated to show “Lake America” for users in the United States, following President Donald Trump’s executive order this week to rename the Great Lake.

In Canada, however, users will continue to see it labeled as Lake Ontario on Google Maps. But if they search for Lake America, that name will come up in their results.

Yet, many Canadian websites and applications, such as Hydro One, LCBO, and GO Transit, have also started showing “Lake America” in their maps. This is likely because they use third-party mapping services based in the U. S.

“We are aware that Lake Ontario is being incorrectly labeled on our outage map,” Hydro One stated in an online message on Sunday. “The issue originates from a third-party mapping service. We are working with our vendor to fix it quickly and restore the correct geographic name. We apologize for any confusion this has caused.”

Enova Power’s Outage Map for parts of Waterloo Region was also displaying the Great Lake as “Lake America” as of Monday morning but was updated before 9:00 a. m. to reflect Lake Ontario.

Grand Bridge Energy serving Cambridge and Brantford had already listed the lake correctly as Lake Ontario by Monday.

Stephen Crawford, who is the Ford government’s Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement, acknowledged the situation by mentioning that some government agency websites source their map data directly from Google Maps.

“Following recent changes made by Google, we’re actively reviewing our websites to ensure they all identify Lake Ontario correctly,” he shared in an online statement.

The search giant indicated in a post on August 29 that it made this change due to the U. S. government’s geographic names database formally renaming the lake; users outside Canada and the U. S. will see both names displayed.

“It’s official! LAKE AMERICA on Google Maps,” White House communications director Steven Cheung tweeted on Sunday.

Diving into ABC’s “This Week” program on Sunday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford remarked that he doubts this name change will stick despite Trump signing the executive order last Thursday.

“It was like something out of ‘Saturday Night Live’ when (Trump) signed a document saying change it to Lake America,” Ford said.

“No one’s going to call it Lake of America. It’s been known as Lake Ontario for hundreds of years. It’ll continue being called that.”

This past Saturday, Ford revealed a large sign in Winona, a small lakeside community part of Hamilton, Ont., stating “Lake Ontario, now and always.”

Also over the weekend, Trump posted an AI-generated video where he switched out a sign for Lake Ontario with one reading “Welcome to Lake America,” then danced along to YMCA by The Village People.

Prime Minister Mark Carney responded via social media regarding Trump’s effort to rename the lake last Thursday. Carney emphasized that Canadians recognize that Lake Ontario will always be referred to by its original name: “then, now and always.”

Lake Ontario is one of five Great Lakes located between Ontario and New York; interestingly enough, Canada’s province is named after this lake.

The governor of New York Kathy Hochul mentioned after Trump signed his order that New York won’t adopt this new name either.

Tensions have risen between both countries since trade discussions collapsed on August 21st.

Both nations accused each other of making last-minute alterations to a proposed interim trade agreement.

This Tuesday saw the federal government announcing more than $27 billion in retaliatory measures set to begin September 8th due to new tariffs imposed by the U. S.

The idea of renaming this body of water came up when Trump engaged in escalating verbal exchanges with Ontario’s premier earlier this month.

On August 24th Ford called Trump a bully and loser while Trump fired back calling him a less charismatic version than his late brother Rob Ford with less intelligence too.

The premier commented during his ABC appearance on Sunday about how things got heated between himself and Trump but stressed you have “eventually got to stand up” against someone who repeatedly insults your country.

He added how unfortunate it was that he lowered himself during those exchanges but wished both sides would redirect focus toward achieving beneficial free-trade agreements together instead.

Trump previously signed another similar executive order last year changing Gulf Of Mexico’s title into Gulf Of America.

These orders only affect U. S.-federal documents plus geographical services yet many online mapping systems along with American news agencies have begun referring it using Gulf Of America already.
