A 28-year-old man from Kitchener is facing several charges after police reported a break-in at a women’s prison on Sunday night.

Waterloo regional police responded to calls about the incident at the Grand Valley Institution for Women on Homer Watson Boulevard around 8:30 p. m. that evening.

According to their investigation, the man climbed over a fence and entered the yard. Once inside, he allegedly assaulted two individuals.

The two victims sustained minor injuries.

The man was charged with break and enter, two counts of assault, and mischief under $5,000. Police stated he was held for a bail hearing.

If anyone has information regarding this case, they are encouraged to contact the police or reach out to Crime Stoppers.

A representative from Correctional Service Canada (CSC) informed us via email that an individual unlawfully accessed the facility and assaulted two inmates.

The facility quickly went into lockdown mode to protect both inmates and staff, with the lockdown being lifted early Monday morning.

“To prevent unauthorized entry, the institution maintains perimeter surveillance and access control systems, supported by trained staff and technology to detect and deter potential breaches,” said the spokesperson.

“In this case, once the perimeter was breached, the perpetrator was quickly apprehended and detained by CSC until Waterloo regional police arrived to make an arrest.”

The spokesperson added that CSC will look into what happened during this incident and “take appropriate measures.”
