With the ongoing forest fires in northwestern Ontario sending smoke southward, the local air quality rating for the Region of Waterloo is showing signs of improvement, as reported by Environment Canada.

Environment Canada has changed the “orange” air quality warning that was in place since early last week to a more moderate “yellow” status.

Data from Environment Canada, updated Sunday, July 19 at 6:00 a. m.

After Saturday marked the fifth consecutive day with an air-quality scale rating of 10 or higher, indicating “very high risk”, Sunday saw a decrease down to a rating of 4. A score of 4 signifies a “moderate risk”, with Environment Canada still advising people to keep monitoring road visibility and consider reducing intense physical activities if they experience symptoms related to air quality.

Even though smoke levels are improving, Environment Canada recommends keeping windows and doors shut as much as possible and staying alert for any respiratory issues or chest discomfort.

The province still has active fires burning, including some that have reached as far south as North Bay. The Ministry of Natural Resources fire map shows there are currently 183 active fires as of Sunday at 7:00 a. m. British Columbia is also reporting 114 fires this morning, along with other provinces like Nova Scotia.
