Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a youth “in relation to the death of another youth.”
In a press release on Friday, May 1, 2026, the OPP stated that officers from the Lennox and Addington (L& A) County detachment were called to a school in Bath, Ontario, on Monday, Mar. 9, 2026, “for a medical emergency.”
“One youth was transported to hospital and later died,” the OPP noted.
The investigation is still ongoing and is being led by the L& A OPP Crime Unit along with the Office of the Chief Coroner.
“Throughout the process, police have worked cooperatively with school officials,” according to the OPP.
As part of their investigation, police reported that an unidentified youth has been charged with:
Criminal harassment Indignity to a dead body Two counts of indecent communications
“The identities of all individuals involved are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act,” said the press release.
“No further information will be released out of respect for the privacy of the family.”
Kingstonist has asked for confirmation that Bath Public School is where this incident took place. A student suffered a medical emergency on March 9 and later died in hospital as previously mentioned. The OPP did not immediately respond about whether this was indeed Bath Public School or answer questions regarding both youths’ ages or how they applied charges like “indignity to a dead body” if the deceased didn’t pass away until at hospital.
According to Section 372 (2) of Canada’s Criminal Code, “indecent communications” involve someone who “with intent to alarm or annoy a person makes an indecent communication either directly or indirectly by telecommunication.”
The charge concerning “indignity to a dead body” falls under Section 182 of the Criminal Code which states that “Every person is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for up to five years or guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction who:
neglects without lawful excuse any duty imposed by law relating to burial of human remains orimproperly interferes with or offers indignity toward a dead human body or human remains whether buried or not.”
Pursuant to section 264 of Canada’s Criminal Code, criminal harassment includes engaging in:
“repeatedly following from one place to [another] person or anyone known to them; repeatedly communicating with either directly or indirectly,[another] person or anyone known to them; watching over dwelling-house where [another] person resides; orengaging in threatening conduct directed at [another] person or any member of their family.”
The Village of Bath is situated within Loyalist Township just west of Kingston in Lennox and Addington County.
This article will be updated if/when responses come from OPP regarding Kingstonist inquiries.
UPDATE (Friday, May 1, 2026 at 4:57 p. m.):
In response to questions from Kingstonist, OPP said they won’t confirm whether Bath Public School was where this incident occurred leading up to student’s death. “To protect those involved’s identity no specific details – including ages – can be released,” Sergeant Erin Cranton from OPP East Region told Kingstonist when asked about ages related between accused youth and deceased student. Kinstonist also sought more details regarding how exactly “indignity towards a dead body” charge arose when it had been clarified before that student passed away at hospital rather than school. Cranton stated upon inquiry about timeline events;“We understand public interest surrounding this criminal charge. Prolonged life-saving measures were attempted by medical staff but sadly individual couldn’t be saved,” Cranton explained further stating;“Victim determined deceased time relevant towards charge. Since matter now stands before courts no additional information can be provided.”
