KINGSTON – Nearly 13,000 Hydro One customers found themselves without power on Friday night after a vehicle collided with a utility pole in the city’s west end.

The accident occurred near the intersection of Midland Avenue and Princess Street shortly after 7 p. m.

Firefighters and police from Kingston were called to investigate reports of an explosion on Midland Avenue and downed wires along Princess Street just after the crash.

“Hydro One crews are on site and assessing the situation after an outage impacting approximately 12,800 customers occurred in Kingston due to a vehicle coming into contact with a Hydro One pole,” said Hydro One spokesperson Kaitlyn Ford.

According to Hydro One, the outage impacted customers from Kingston all the way into Prince Edward County.

Initially, Hydro One estimated that power would be restored by 9:45 p. m. Electricity started coming back for residents in west-end neighborhoods around 11:15 p. m.

People living nearby mentioned on social media that they heard a loud bang just before losing power.
